Last update: 20 March, 2017

Sometimes we become so obsessed with trying to find happiness that we don't realize the attitudes or actions that take us away from it. Discover the eleven situations that can lead you to unhappiness and avoid them.

11 attacks on happiness

1. Put aside stubbornness

Being right can be very rewarding, but in some situations it is preferable to be kind rather than argue at any cost. It is best to avoid confrontation over irrelevant topics or when the ego is very present.

2. Stop wanting to have everything under control

The happiest times usually come when we let things take their course and are willing to live without pressure.

3. Don't blame others

Blaming others doesn't make you happy. The only result will be embittering yourself and ending relationships. If you believe that something has hurt you, learn from this experience to take back the reins of your life. When you blame others, you give them power over you and your happiness.

4. Renounce internal defeatist dialogue

They say that we ourselves are our own worst enemy, and that's right. When we engage in a defeatist internal dialogue, we create a negative image which we will later project.

5. Fight your limiting beliefs

Some beliefs take us away from happiness because they do not allow us to see the wealth that surrounds us. Ideas such as racism or discrimination are examples of this, although there are less drastic situations.

6. Stop pacing yourself

Happiness is not possible with self-compassion, because the former requires a high self-love, while the latter convinces you that you are weak and unable to get things.

7. Don't allow yourself the luxury of criticism

Criticizing is very easy, but it only wastes time, ruins relationships with others, and ultimately leaves no lasting satisfaction that leads to happiness.

8. Forget the need to impress others

We usually think that impressing others will make us feel safer and happier. It's false; if we focus on impressing others, we will enter a vicious circle from which it will be difficult to get out.

9. Overcome your resistance to change

All changes are good in order to find happiness. No matter what change it is, it will always give the opportunity to live new experiences that bring joy.

10. Defeat your fears

Overcoming your fears will make you happier, as you will realize that you are able to overcome your limits.

11. Live your life according to your expectations

Trying to please others will not make you happy, and you probably won't live to the full in doing so. To be truly happy, it is important to learn to differentiate what you want and what motivates you from external expectations.
