Managing a work group: 7 key points

Last update: June 07, 2021

Managing a work group requires special sensitivity, a knowledge that is the fruit of knowledge and experience. We are talking about an essential role for the functioning of the group, so that the results of the collective commitment are greater than the sum of the individualities.

In other words, knowing the strategies for managing work groups allows you to achieve many goals. It is a skill in great demand by companies for positions of greater responsibility, roles in which the challenges are represented above all by the human factor.

Team management in the age of knowledge and communication

We live in the age of knowledge and communication. What does it mean? That the world is changing at great speed; therefore, to survive in any environment, the individual or group must set in motion intuitive or automated changes or transformations. The time for reflection is reduced; it is the environment itself that requires quick answers.

On the other hand, both in group dynamics and in other fields, it is observed that knowledge acquires value and generates more knowledge if it is applied. We have discovered that much of a team's power lies in the way it is organized.

The drive of each person who joins a team brings the organization closer to the set objectives, within a framework of joint responsibility. It might sound strange, but it's not.

Individual contribution within a company gives character to the group. A strength that will translate into the achievement of objectives, for the benefit of the working environment.

Strategies for efficient management of work groups

The management of a work group passes, first of all, from involvement of the people who have been entrusted with greater responsibilities. An attribution that can be determined by knowledge and experience, but also by other variables such as the charisma.

On the other hand, it is true that a group can complete its projects even without good management of resources and the group itself, but it will be much more difficult.

One of the central elements of the team will therefore be the leader. His knowledge of the sector, experience and preparation are essential for the development of the assignments and the achievement of objectives. His intervention must be effective, able to prioritize social skills and goal setting.

At the same time, it plays another fundamental role: it must get the commitment of the whole team. If every person involved in the project can identify with the objectives, it will be easier to achieve them. To do this, the leader must consider a number of key points.

Key points in managing a work group

At this point it is time to see what are the key points that can help manage a team. The working group, whatever it is, will be able to achieve the objectives set more successfully if the leader knows how to make good use of these tools:

  • Mission chiara: knowing how to convey the mission of the organization increases or keeps motivation high, as well as acting as a guide so that no one gets lost along the way.
  • Accepting values: it is easier to maintain a good working climate when there is mutual understanding. It is therefore necessary to know and accept the values, both of the company and of the people involved in the team.
  • Encourage communication: the group itself, in its way of operating, orienting itself or suggesting changes, provides valuable information on the type of management it needs.
  • Identify each member's strengths: is the starting point. Thanks to this, the leader will be able to place each professional figure in the position in which he can offer maximum performance to the group.
  • Appreciation: both individual and collective efforts must be valued and recognized. In this way, greater job satisfaction is achieved that goes beyond the simple monetary incentive, with a positive impact on every member of the team.
  • Selection: a correct choice of personnel is fundamental for the creation of a group in which the members contribute to the achievement of the goals and bring added value.
  • Growth: to achieve greater efficiency, it is necessary to promote the growth of the group and of the individual.

One last key point

These are just a few key elements that we can detect in the leaders who have led their team to success. It should be remembered that each work team is different and, therefore, the same strategy can work in one case and not in another. This is why it is so important to make an assessment before taking any corrective action.

On the other hand, having described these seven key points, we have yet to identify the last one, the one that allows everything else to work.

It's about the attitude and commitment of the group. This includes feeling involved in events, having the sensitivity necessary to understand the changes caused by external factors and the ability to propose solutions to unexpected problems that may arise.

“Coming together is the beginning. Staying together is progress. Working together is success ”.
