When appearances are deceiving

Last update: Augusts 07, 2016

We almost always tend to judge people by their appearances, without waiting to get to know them better. Yet we should know that the external judgment we formulate about a person after seeing him does not always correspond to reality.

Appearance is the way others see and perceive us: the clothes we wear, the way we speak, our gestures… But often this doesn't really reflect what we would like to express about us.

When we really know a person, however, we share our thoughts with her and we are able to find out what her personality is and what makes her different from others.

Go beyond appearances

When we meet a person for the first time, we immediately notice his outward appearance. We focus on her clothes, her face, the accessories she wears, and from this we deduce what her character and personality are. Too often, we tend to judge without knowing.

It is up to each of us to remedy this first judgment since, only when we enter into a relationship of friendship or deeper knowledge with a person, we are able to see what it really is.

A cartoon that, from an early age, invites us to reflect on this topic is Beauty and the Beast. This wonderful story teaches us that we shouldn't judge the beast by its appearance, but go deeper to find out what it really is like.

Sometimes we can't realize how good a person is until we get to know them. Because, if we focus only on its appearance, we are forgetting a profound truth: appearance deceives, we cannot rely on it.
