What to do with your life when you can't find the right path?

Last update: December 12, 2017

There are people who at some point feel that the path they are following is completely meaningless. None of the possibilities before them seem to make sense to them, so they despair in their countless failed attempts to make a change that erases that feeling. There is no future, there are no goals or objectives. You don't know what to do with your life.

It has happened to everyone to feel this way, as if we were in a dead end. There is a great interior emptiness, there is nothing outside and little inside. We persist in finding the culprits, but the truth is that this situation depends only on us.

Even if we don't want to admit it, everything we have done up to now, our decisions, our refusals, our way of life, have led us to walk this path that seems to have no way out.

An opportunity to rediscover yourself

When you don't know what to do with your life, when you have reached that point where you can't find a way out, regardless of anguish, anxiety, the desire to get out of it, you have to find yourself.

When did we start focusing on others and forgetting about us? When did we stop asking ourselves what they really want to do? How long has it been that what to do with our life has become the top priority for us? Our way of life leads us to operate on autopilot and act as if we were robots, unaware of the present moment.

When you find yourself in a dead end, not knowing what to do with your life, then you have to stop. It is the perfect time to become aware of yourself and of what is around you, to connect again with the outer and inner world. themselves and what is around us.

Our desires, our hopes, what really motivates us, will be there to point out to us all the goals we had, but which we have not wanted to see for a long time because we have strayed from our path. We think there is no way out when in reality the solution is within us. Motivation comes from within, but for it to arrive you need to know what you want.

We know within ourselves what the right path is. Except that the time we lived on autopilot has dulled our instincts making us feel lost.

It is true that at first, when you don't know what to do, the reaction is to turn around, kick, try to run in all directions, as if we were a runaway horse. But it is necessary to get to the point where you realize that you have to stop to become aware of what has just been mentioned.

If you don't know what to do with your life, you have to start accepting reality

It is a very important step in being able to change the situation. However, it is also likely that we realize that accepting reality was what led us to find ourselves in this impasse.

We tend to live with various expectations about how things should go. "I finish my studies, I find a job, then the love of my life with which I will have children and I will be happy". Sounds perfect, right? It is the ideal that many people aspire to. But what if everything were different?

The expectations we have do not give us the slightest guarantee that the stages of our journey will be exactly these. Problems, difficulties and adversities will most likely arise that will make us frustrated, angry, determined to refuse in many cases that what happens to us does not meet our expectations.

If we are overwhelmed by a great indecision, perhaps it is the case to consult a specialist with which we can find out if what we have to do is to go back to identify the crossroads in which we are lost or if the solution is to look for alternatives to proceed in the same crossroads in which we are now stalled. Often the choice of one option over another will depend on the price we are willing to pay to try to reach one or the other destination.

There are times more favorable than others to have this existential crisis. Perhaps the first is when we become adults, when we have to choose what we want to dedicate ourselves to and how we want our life to be. The second arrives at a more mature age, around the age of 40, with a crisis known to all those who leave behind one phase of life to start another.

Expectations sometimes prevent us from being flexible with the problems and difficulties that may arise.

In many moments of change, in which we move from one phase to another, we can feel lost. It is a natural sensation and in principle it should not scare us. However, if it happens, we must avoid that the feeling of discomfort leads us to abandonment. Moments of change are also moments for intelligence and patience, to decide with your head, but also to make the right decision with confidence. Regardless of what we choose, there will be no shortage of people who will tell us that we are wrong.

By stepping back or finding alternatives, in any case, all situations have a way out. Sometimes it is logical and predictable, other times surprising, risky and enigmatic. The first is easy to achieve; for the second, as already said, let us not be overwhelmed byagitation, which most of all prevents us from seeing opportunities.
