The good fortune to have a good teacher

Last update: July 17, 2016

If we asked you which were the professors who have marked you the most, you probably wouldn't hesitate to answer for a moment. Remember their names, their way of teaching and why they left their mark on you. A good teacher does not forget.

The same goes for other people who educate us outside of academia, because whoever educates us in a valid way leaves a mark that goes beyond mere knowledge transmitted.

Certainly hundreds of people pass through our lives and most of them leave without leaving a trace. However, those that demonstrate a special ability to impart knowledge to us are unforgettable. Why are we lucky if we had a good teacher? Because he has given us much more than what he had set out to do and what we expected.

An impossible teacher to forget

It is interesting to see that children have different heroes throughout their childhood. In addition to parents or fictional characters, teachers occupy a very important place in their life.

For example, if a professor inculcates the value of effort, pronounces the right words at the right time, or uses a fun study technique, it is very likely that the knowledge acquired by the pupil remains linked to the memory of the element that made it so unique.

Unfortunately, many professors are repetitive, carry out the activities in a monotonous way and strictly adhere to the structure of the books. However, during our lifetime, there have been some outstanding professors who have demonstrated a special ability to touch our souls.

A good teacher is one who teaches while having fun, the one who demonstrates his vocation in front of 30 children who are bored and eager to be elsewhere playing, the one who, with his words, helps to choose the profession of his life.

What should the ideal teacher be like?

The ideal teacher is not someone who gives a few tasks or allows children to do whatever they want in the classroom; neither is he who forces his pupils to study all afternoon or who, with his tyranny, keeps the class in absolute silence.

In reverse, a good teacher allows his pupils to overcome their limits, offering them challenges slightly beyond their current possibilities. Furthermore, he is the one who possesses sufficient skills to find the best way for his pupils to internalize the content he wants to convey.

The vocation is perhaps not evident from an early age, but it is easily noticed in the people who have it. It becomes an attitude, a positive disposition in the face of the challenges that the class may present.

If he treats everyone equally and makes no difference, if he does not mind spending more time to explain to those who do not understand, if he is friendly and close to the students and, above all, if he has a great deal of patience, then he is the ideal teacher.

At the same time, he must not lack enthusiasm for his work, the desire to continually surpass himself, to look for new ways of saying the same message and to give the best of oneself in the lesson it teaches.

True training is also an aspect that no teacher should put aside. What does it mean? It means that, in addition to transmitting data, formulas and techniques, it must have the ability to teach values and good habits.

Are there great teachers outside of school?

So far we have talked about children and teachers from the academic world. However, the function of a mentor is not limited to age or profession. Many adults also look for someone to guide them, teach them what they need or want to learn.

Although you can choose, there are also professors who meet by pure chance, which could have happened in the next class or in the previous course.

The mentor offers all his knowledge to his disciples or apprentices and helps them overcome various obstacles. This is usually someone with a lot of industry experience and a special gift for teaching or for imparting wisdom.

No matter how old you are: you still have time to choose "the best teacher" in life.
