The unification of sexological knowledge is fundamental to make the function of substantive sexology more effective and understandable.

Substantial sexology, a necessary revolution

Last update: July 03, 2022

Substantial sexology is the science that studies the sexes. There is a nuance in this short definition, since the term "sexes" is used in the plural and not in the singular ("sex"). This discipline, in fact, does not apply its field of study to "how to have sex", it does not allude to intimate relationships. Nor does it study only the "sex" that one possesses, in reference to the physiology and problems of the genitals. This subject deals with the sexes as an intrinsic fact of the human condition itself.

The plural of this well-known noun is used because substantive sexology is concerned with and deals with both men and women. Moreover, even if the sexes are physiologically two, the ways of feeling and living one's sexuality as a man or a woman are infinite. This, therefore, is a discipline that considers sex (the sexes) as a diversifying fact.

But how is substantial sexology born? How does it really work and, above all, how does it intervene in our everyday life? We have dedicated this article to better explain the main characteristics of this subject which, at the same time, includes research in the biological, psychological and anthropological fields.

Why is there talk of substantive sexology?

Since Iwan Bloch first coined the term "sexology" in 1907, a large literature on the subject has developed. We have a very rich epistemology that describes and presents sexology as a discipline and not as a branch or a specialization of others (biology, anthropology, philosophy, psychology, sociology, ethnology…). However, much of the sexological knowledge was collected in a decidedly fragmented and not very homogeneous way.

Fragmentation is perceived in every discipline that studies sex as part of it, when it is not considered a whole. For example, we can talk about the so-called sexual psychology or even about sexual medicine, up to sexual anthropology, and so on. This inevitable crumbling produces a constant, profoundly disorganized segmentation of sexological knowledge.

Sexology is mistakenly associated with intimate relationships and not with the sexual problem of mankind. This discourse is much broader and includes not only intimate relationships, but all those dynamics that have to do with men and women as sexual beings.

Substantial sexology receives this name because it stands as the sexology that encompasses all this knowledge, fully structured, harmonious and coherent in its discipline.

In this way he finally manages to free himself from the mere character of the "sexual", used simply as an adjective by many other disciplines, as seen above. It is no longer a small part of them, but becomes substantial, taking on the value of a discipline that studies the sexes following a single thread, coherent, logical, recognizable and credible.

The advantages of substantive sexology

Having its own identity, with an episteme (what Plato called certain, acquired and unique knowledge capable of opposing the opinion of the individual), a history, a methodology and specific tools allows sexology to address difficulties and problems much more effectively and comprehensively.

This is an epochal turning point, with a whole series of advantages that derive directly from the new reformulation of the discipline:

  • Better trained professionals. Substantive sexology ensures that professionals have a broad knowledge of the human sexual fact and not of a specific field.
  • Promotion of diversity. Sex must be seen and studied not only as a factor of differentiation, but as a source of diversity, ensuring an understanding of all the dynamics, tensions and transformations of sexual diversity. In turn, it allows you to deal with the problems and difficulties of men and women in a much more holistic way.
  • Academic prominence. The unified discourse of substantive sexology will likely lead to the birth of a university degree of its own. Combining all sexological knowledge and harmonizing it into one discipline is in itself an excellent motivation to achieve this highly meritorious goal.
  • A discipline at the service of society. This set of knowledge will clarify the doubts that haunt man about his sexual sphere. Concepts such as virginity, desire, seduction or inconspicuous practices will be free from stereotypes and prejudices. And this "clearance" will be perpetuated not in a commercial, cynical or grotesque way, but thanks to the work of substantive sexology professionals, developing a new and more conscious sexual education.

final Thoughts

This new sexology is the one that will best describe all the facts of sexual diversity. Furthermore, it will have the advantage of integrating all the discourses on the study of the sexes to understand and deal with all kinds of problems with the power of finally homogeneous and shared discourses.

The term "substantial" serves as a claim to what sexology is and should be, and has a transitory character. When sexology acquires the importance and the space it deserves, it will be possible to name it without adjective, because it will itself be synonymous with substantiality.

The most interesting aspect, however, concerns the enormous advantages that humanity will be able to enjoy, overcoming cultural taboos and favoring the normalization of a fundamental part of the life of all of us.
