Bad day? Strategies to change it

Last update: May 19, 2019

All of us can have a bad day. It's not a drama, but it can affect the whole week at times. Unfortunately, a bad day can completely change our mood.

A bad day can affect us to the point of having repercussions also in relationships with friends and family. This happens when we get caught up in short temper and negative thoughts. The consequence is logical: for those close to us it becomes very difficult to communicate.

When we have a bad day, the worst aspect is definitely the contact with other people. On the one hand, we feel the need to let off steam; on the other hand, we do not want to pass our problems on to others. This way we only increase our frustration.

What to do to better face a bad day

There are numerous aspects that can affect your day and make it negative, from a spilled coffee to an argument with your partner. Many of these conditionings are lurking in the workplace too. Think, for example, of a traffic jam on your way to the office, an upcoming deadline, a comment that bothered you ...

All these factors add up and seriously compromise calm. Depending on the stress level of the situation, we become like a time bomb: on the verge of exploding at any moment.

Strategies for making a bad day better

Identify the conditioning factors

These are the details that, added up, lead to a bad day. But we ourselves create the conditions, based on facts or circumstances to which we attach too much importance. In reality, these are just details that we dwell on too much.

First of all, therefore, we need to understand which events are really important. Only in this way can we begin to give less importance to small daily inconveniences.

Worrying about the important things

It is true that there are events and situations that deserve our full attention and can be worrying. But in most cases this is not the case. Worrying too much about minor things can cause significant emotional distress.

Give the right priority to events

Often, especially when the mood is negative, we tend to oversize the importance of small events. This is because we are not prioritizing things right. In fact, there is no point in extolling situations that can resolve themselves.

To avoid this, it is essential to understand which aspects to reserve importance. What are the aspects that we really want to work? What are we not willing to give up?

Learn to enjoy the things you like

In connection with the previous point, the first place on the list of priorities should be occupied by our passions or pastimes. These are precisely the activities that make a person happy.

Fostering a positive mood will help avoid negative emotions. A simple walk in a pleasant place, a good read, preparing a dish that we really like ... In short, doing what we like best, even the simplest thing, is a great help to improve the mood.

Exercise

Any type of exercise causes the body to secretion endorphins: the hormones of happiness. In addition to promoting the secretion of this hormone, physical activity helps to relax the mind. This happens especially during guided lessons, such as those done in the gym.

Thanks to concentration in physical activity, the mind relaxes. While we are completely absorbed in the exercise we forget the fears caused by the problems we tend to anticipate.

Smiling to make a bad day better

Smile is probably the most genuine expression of happiness. Some studies have shown that by adopting the typical attitude of an emotion, we also reproduce its sensation. This means that feeling happy makes us smile, but also that smiling makes us happy.

These studies have also shown that the position of the smiling mouth promotes the secretion of dopamine, another hormone of happiness. In this way we can "fool" our brain simply by smiling for a few seconds. It is enough for dopamine to be generated.

It is important not to get caught up in negative emotions caused by small details. In this way we will avoid having a bad day, with all the consequences it can have on our emotional well-being. If we allow ourselves to be influenced by small negative events, we will no longer be able to face the really important situations. And we will also give up enjoying the positive things in life.
